IaaS: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (Sometimes it’s called Hardware-as-a-Service.) If you wanted to run an application in your business you would have to invest in hardware, routers, firewalls, warrantees, etc. and the people to support/install this expensive hardware. This would leave to large upfront costs and time on projects. With IaaS you essentially let Microsoft, Amazon, etc look after the hardware, network, and storage with fees related to usage. This then enables companies to reduce costs for employees, and space concentrating on products and services they specialize in. A good example is that most large companies use to have telephone exchanges within their company they maintained and looked after. This is now completely transferred to the telecoms companies.

SAAS Explained

Software as a Service (SaaS), represent the largest cloud market and are still growing quickly. SaaS uses the web to deliver applications that are managed by a third-party vendor and whose interface is accessed on the clients’ side. SaaS applications can be run directly from a web browser without any downloads or installations required, although some require plugins.

Because of the web delivery model, SaaS eliminates the need to install and run applications on individual computers. With SaaS, it’s easy for enterprises to streamline their maintenance and support, because everything can be managed by vendors: applications, runtime, data, middleware, OSes, virtualization, servers, storage and networking.

SaaS offering types include email and collaboration, customer relationship management, and healthcare-related applications. Some large enterprises that are not traditionally thought of as software vendors have started building SaaS as an additional source of revenue in order to gain a competitive advantage.

PAAS Explained

PaaS, is a category of cloud computing that provides a platform and environment to allow developers to build applications and services over the internet. PaaS services are hosted in the cloud and accessed by users simply via their web browser.

Platform as a Service allows users to create software applications using tools supplied by the provider. PaaS services can consist of preconfigured features that customers can subscribe to; they can choose to include the features that meet their requirements while discarding those that do not. Consequently, packages can vary from offering simple point-and-click frameworks where no client side hosting expertise is required to supplying the infrastructure options for advanced development.
